THE EFFICIENCY OF STREAMING IN PRIMARY SCHOOL(FIRST PROPOSAL/DRAFT)
THESIS PROPOSAL
TITLE: THE EFFECIENCY OF STREAMING IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
The master programme that I would like to enroll is based on the importance of streaming in teaching mathematics in upper primary classes in order to get the desired results in Penilaian Sekolah rendah (P.S.R). As we know, the demands of teaching mathematics today are substantially different than they were as recently as 10 or 15 years ago. Teachers today must consider new methods including group learning, projects and computer assisted work. In short, a strong content background in mathematics is a necessary condition for teaching today. One important step in improving mathematics education is to improve mathematics teaching, and professional development is a key to bringing new knowledge and skills to mathematics teachers. CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEWBasically, streaming is a system based upon the pupils’ abilities, attainment and rates of progress. It is a function of sorting and selecting different types of pupils. Streaming was recommended as a means of enabling students to learn at their own pace, varying numbers of language at different proficiency levels.CHAPTER 3: OBJECTIVES
- To improve the teaching of primary mathematics education.
- To improve general attainment of pupils in the school.
- To improve the educational provisions for the bright, average and the slow learners.
- To improve the percentage passes of P.S.R in mathematics.
CHAPTER 4: SYSTEM OVERVIEW According to the Report of Education Commission 1972 which emphasized that the National Education System of Brunei should be organizes specifically to suit the development of Brunei Darussalam. One of the aims is to provide all Brunei Children with every possible opportunity to make themselves useful in the development of the country in order to meet the needs of the country so that all the needs of the country would be fulfilled by the Bruneians . So, one way we could apply this is by assessing children differently according to their abilities. By using this system, we could deliver these students to proper routes of their careers and this would prevent the possible vast of wastage of human resources in the long term planning. CHAPTER 5: IMPLEMENTING STREAMING IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS We can implement this streaming in our daily teaching by splitting them into good, average and below average in the beginning of the year. By doing that, it is easy to recognize each pupil’s development, spot their weaknesses and strengthens through out the year. From my six years of teaching experiences, I always group them homogenously and as a result, it helped my teaching went smoothly and my time on task was not wasted. Importantly, I was more focused with the below average pupils. I could monitor each members in this group and pay more attention individually while the others doing extra works. It helped a lot especially in revising the P.S.R papers. Even though the outcomes for maths results were not really excellent, but almost the pupils had passed. For me, it was a satisfactory moments in terms of struggling the below average pupils since the percentage passes of P.S.R depends on these three level of pupils. So, it’s up to the class teacher to make sure that all the three levels had enough revision in P.S.R. By doing the streaming pupils in class, it helps teachers to monitor each group according to their pace. By doing the grouping too, the pupils are helping each other in solving the problems and they would be likely to form the buddy system . They also create cooperative learning which is one form of learning style. CHAPTER 6 : METHODOLOGY
- RESEARCH PROJECT IN PREVIOUS SCHOOL-SEKOLAH RENDAH BERAKAS GARISON
- OBSERVATION FOR NORMAL AND STREAMING CLASS
PRIMARY 5A AND 5B PRIMARY 6A AND 6B
- COMPARATION BETWEEN A NORMAL CLASS AND STREAMING CLASS
PRIMARY 5A AND 5B PRIMARY 6A AND 6B
- RECORD PUPILS IN A NORMAL AND STREAMING CLASS THORUGH ASSESSMENTS/RECORD BOOKS
-PUPILS MARKS
- OBSERVATION OF TEACHING IN STREAMING CLASS
-TEACHERS TEACHING APROACH IN A GROUP
- INTERVIEW/QUETIONAIRE WITH PUPILS AND TEACHERS
- ASSESSMENT THROUGH MONTHLY TEST AND MID YEAR EXAM
CHAPTER 7: CONCLUSION I believe that streaming would be a good step for upper primary teachers especially for dealing with the below average pupils. The teacher should have a clear goal, easily understood and practicable. So it is up to the educators to ensure that streaming is used to achieve the desired objectives and to upgrade the standards of education.Logically, the streaming of pupils would be likely to have good results both interms of motivation and in the measured progress in learning that took place.
